Reasons to Travel to Iran:  Culture and People

Before the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Western powers represented quite a presence in Iran.  It was a time of rapid change, modernization and Westernization.  The Revolution changed all4d1.jpg (46124 bytes) that.  Iran became isolated from the rest of the world and its influences for over twenty years.  As a result, Iran now boasts a diverse culture which has not yet entirely succumbed to Westernization and Americanization.  Here is a place with no McDonalds!  Instead, life continues on in much the same manner as it has for centuries.  The diversity of cultures within the culture still thrives.

The 4d2.jpg (48032 bytes)mountains of Iran have played a significant role in keeping different tribal groups separate from one another.  Iran boasts two main mountain ranges, the Zagros and the Alborz.   Because of the mountains, tribal communities are still separated enough to maintain their nomadic lifestyles despite modern influence.  These tribes include: Kurds, Turkoman, Shahsavan, Qash q'ai, Beluch, Afshar, Lors, and Lori Bakhtiari.

Several religious minorities flourish within the more prevalent Moslem community.  These religious minorities include: Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians.

"The real meaning of travel, like that of a conversation by the fireside, is the discovery of oneself through contact with other people, and its condition is self-commitment in the dialogue."

-Paul Tournier, The Meaning of Persons, 1957
