About Women's Wear in Iran
At this
point I won't go into all the reasons why it is required.
Mainly what you need to know is that if you travel in Iran and you're a woman,
you must wear a coat and scarf. It is required and you agree to do it when
you apply for a visa.
For some of us Western women, the thought of having to wear a scarf is
horrifying. "What about our freedom?" we chant. "What
about our self-expression?"
I've discovered it to be an opportunity to truly walk in the shoes of
Iranian women. Wearing the scarf has allowed me to understand a great deal
more about the Iranian culture than I otherwise could have. I greatly
enjoy the simplicity of my Iranian wardrobe. It has its advantages:
1) You can take fewer clothes. You'll
wear
the coat and scarf every day, so what's the point of bringing a
lot of outfits
and accessories?
2) You will spend less time fixing your
hair and getting beautiful in the morning. Just roll out of bed, throw
on the scarf
and coat and you're down eating breakfast. It's like a vacation!
3) You don't need to pack a hair dryer,
make-up,
etc.
4) Since you don't need to worry about what you look like, you can focus on
seeing Iran and the amazing things there.
5) By the time it becomes a real drag,
you'll be
boarding the plane for home! You, at least, have a home where you can take
it off!
6) It provides a bonding effect for Iranian
women and foreign women who are respectful enough to abide by the custom and the law. (Misery
loves company.)
7) It feels like a Halloween costume. Is that good or
bad?
Any additions to this list by
fellow travelers are more than welcome, but the fellow travelers must be women
themselves.
