| Village rugs
and carpets are those usually woven in the villages of Iran.
Often, the weavers are sedentary tribes people who have been
settled for years.
These rugs are woven in
village homes. Looms are usually set up in the living
room or in the bedroom so the weavers can work on them while
keeping the tea hot, cooking dinner, or minding the children.
Designs and materials are
provided by carpet dealers or producers who contract with the
weavers to make them a certain way. The designs usually
bear the name of the village in which they are woven, so you
can tell where the rug came by the design. The weavers
also get their supplies at the local shops and add their own
color schemes to the designs, much like we crafty ladies of
the West render cross stitch patterns.
Because the weaving
environment is more stable, there is often more quality
control and village productions tend to be more finely woven
and very sturdy. Cotton is often used for the warp
because it's more accessible and this adds an additional
stiffness and allows for a finer weave and more curvilinear
design elements. Many of the marvelous village designs
have been around for centuries, and carpets of those patterns
have been associated with that village for as long.
If your style is more formal
and lavish than tribal, village rugs are for you. They
are created for stability, to be displayed in the same living
room or dining room for years and years. They create a
subtle richness in any room with their designs exuding
elegance and their colors subconsciously promoting discussions
of social reform, art, and world peace. Village rugs are
most often the type that appear in Granny's pah-lor (parlor)
or have tea and fine gourmet meals served over them.
