| Up in a
northeastern corner of Iran, just south of the border with
Turkmenistan, a small pocket of Turkoman tribes people still
live in a traditional manner.
And, they weave beautiful,
red rugs in traditional patterns. Many may associate these
patterns with the name Bokhara because, guess what? Turkoman
tribes people live and weave there, too!
The rugs are famous for their
"gols" or "guls" or "flower" or "elephant foot" patterns,
which are all geometric in nature. These were used to
identify the tribe from which the weaver came and were often
woven from memory. They are often woven on a very fine silk
or wool warp. Quite honestly, the result is "like buttah"-
smooth, fine, pliable and rich. It's a lot like walking
on velvet.
Though the traditional colors
are red, black, white, orange and brown, sometimes the modern
weaver ventures into a more modern array of colors. The
effect of all is dazzling.
